History

Formed in 1971, WIA Foundation was a seminal force in American Art during the 70’s. Throughout its history, WIA has proven to be innovative and creative in its ongoing work to change attitudes of the museum and gallery systems, the jurying of exhibitions, and the minimal inclusion of women’s art in those institutions. We took action, gathered statistics, testified in Washington DC, met with museum directors and curators and protested for equality. WIA’s landmark exhibits include: Women Choose Women at the NY- Cultural Center, Works on Paper Womens’ Work at the Brooklyn Museum, and Women In the Arts - Artists Choice - a traveling exhibit. Additional exhibits include those curated by Linda Nochlin, Dore Ashton, Linda Shearer and Lucy Lippard. In the 70’s-80’s WIA ran its own gallery, Women In the Arts Gallery on Broome Street in SoHo, N.Y. Today WIA actively promotes the professionalism, strength and broad reaching creativity of women’s art. WIA documents are included in the Archives of American Art 1971-1979.

WIA is dedicated to the egalitarian principals of inclusion, building a “community” of women artists in non-juried membership and exhibits. Our membership includes artists exhibiting nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, corporation, universities and colleges. Their work is in numerous public and private collections including museum and corporate collections. Moving forward, WIA will present the Dorothy M. Gillespie Speakers Series sponsored by the Dorothy M. Gillespie Foundation.

Curator

Helaine Soller has been WIA’s Executive Coordinator since 2011 and a WIA member since 1976. She holds degrees from Pratt Institute (BFA) and Queens College (MS). Her career spans the fields of fine art and she has shown her artwork in numerous solo, national and international exhibits. She has served as an art curator, educator and as a corporate art director and has received numerous awards for her work.
As the Women In the Arts workshop coordinator since 1983, Soller developed WIA’s NEA grant winning series The Business of Art For Artists series.
